Introduced in early 2019, the Ruger Security 9 Compact pistol is a 9mm based, budget-friendly handgun that works for concealed carry and home defense. While the full-size Ruger Security-9 was a commercial success, it wasn’t long before Ruger fans were asking for a smaller version of the Security 9 as a potential CCW option.
Very much like the name implies, this pistol is a scaled-down version of the larger Security-9 series. The Compact features a barrel that is .58 of an inch shorter than the full-size model and features a grip that is .65 of an inch shorter than the full-size Security 9 models.
Ruger uses the same operational controls on both the full-size and Compact Security-9 models. Most of the Security-9 Compact handguns ship with a 10 round magazine for a 10+1 total capacity. However, the Compact models will also accept the larger 15 round magazines from the full-size Security 9 pistols. Ruger also offers a higher capacity, aftermarket magazine for the Compact that is a 15 round model with a flush-fitting grip extension.
The smaller size of the Compact model makes it easier to conceal compared to the standard Security-9, but equally at home in a belt holster or OWB holster.
