Taurus Model 66

Taurus introduced the Model 66 revolver in 1977 as a competitor of the S&W L frame series of revolvers. In some respects, certain features of the Model 66 appear to be directly influenced by the S&W 686.

All Model 66 revolvers are chambered in .357 Magnum, so they fire .357 Magnum or .38 Special. When the 66 was first introduced, it was only available with a 4” barrel.

Like the Taurus Model 65, the success of the 4” Model 66 led Taurus to begin offering other barrel lengths, including the following:

2.5” Barrel – This model was available from 1993 to 1997, so there are a limited number of this size manufactured. The 2.5” version of the Model 66 is the least common model.

3” Barrel – The model 66’s with a 3” barrel was offered from 1980 to 1992.

6” Barrel – The 6” models were introduced in 1983 and are still produced today.

From 1977 to 2001, the Model 66 featured a 6-shot capacity. In 1991, Taurus also began offering the 66 revolver in a 7-shot option. Today, only the 7-round capacity is available.

On a side note, even though the 7-shot models accommodate one additional round compared to the 6-shot models, the cylinders on the 6 and 7-shot models are identical in size (verified via Taurus customer support). This means the 6 and 7-shot models will fit into the same Taurus 66 holster.

From a gun holster perspective, the most popular holster styles for the Taurus 66 are belt or OWB holsters. Since the 4” model is the most popular size, our most popular sellers are Taurus model 66 holsters made for the 4” barrel. Most of the holster makers we carry support holsters for a 4” Taurus 66. However, through MTR Custom holsters, we can also support holsters made for the model 66 revolvers with a 2.5” or 3” barrel as well.

Our top-selling holster models for the Model 66-4 are the Don Hume H721, Don Hume H721OT,  MTR Custom Pancake, and MTR Custom Deluxe Fullsize Quicksnap holster.

Something else to note about holster fits for the Taurus model 66:

Early generation model 66 revolvers were designed with a half lug, while the more modern models are manufactured with a full lug. Most leather gun holster makers use a full-lug model for the molding process, so a half-lug and full-lug revolver will fit in the same holster.

Any of the gun holster models displayed below are available in a version to fit the Taurus Model 66 with a 2.5”, 3” or 4” barrel.
